Men's Cross Country 2nd at SWTJC Invitational; Women run limited squad

Comments

UVALDE, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Men's Cross Country grabbed a second-place team finish at the Southwest Texas Junior College Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning. The TLU Women, still recovering from a collection of team injuries and illnesses, ran only four student-athletes at the meet.TLU sophomore Travis Koenig made a play for the individual victory. He ran up with the leaders of the race and ultimately finish in fifth place with a time of 17 minutes, 14 seconds over the 3.25-mile course."Travis vied for the top spot until around 1,000 meters to go," said Darlene Holland, TLU's head coach for men's/women's cross country. "He did a lot of the front running in the race, and he needs to learn to race a little smarter in order to win a race like this. The rest of (TLU's) top five were close behind and finished with under a 40-second pack time, so there is improvement on trying to pack that group up. The top 5 order of finish seems to change weekly depending on who has a better kick that day. It was nice to see TLU finishing in a row."Donald Manuszewski and Taylor Stephens posted top-10 finishes with times of 17:31 and 17:33, respectively. Manuszewski took ninth, and Stephens placed 10th.Blake Westbrook and Cameron Reagan completed the TLU top five. Westbrook, in a time of 17:35, came hom in 11th, and Reagan's 17:51 was good for 13th.As a team, the Bulldogs scored 48 points and finished behind Texas A&M International, who won the meet with 22. TLU edged University of Texas-Permian Basin for the runner-up spot. UTPB scored 52."The guys beat UTPB, which is a scholarship program, and we are moving closer to teams like A&M International, which killed us at the Corpus meet the week before," said Holland. "Everyone is still working on things that will help us down the road when we compete at conference."In the women's race, Sarah Fritzsche and Kaitlin Hindes crossed the line in seventh and ninth, respectively. Fritzsche posted a time of 21:07, and Hindes recorded a finish of 21:30.The Bulldogs' also received a 12th-place finish from Kylee Garcia (22:42) and a 14th-place showing from Samantha Lopez (22:53)."The women's race was a little scarce, so it was tough to push when they only had their teammates beside them," said Holland. "Sarah and Kait were paired up, and Kylee and Samantha were as well; so they ran with their partner for two-thirds of the race. It's too bad that there weren't more competitors around to help push for faster times. We only ran 4 women to rest some nagging injuries.TLU will race student-athletes at a couple of different meets next week. The top five on the men's side and the top five on the women's side will race Saturday at the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational in Tacoma, Wash. The other Bulldogs will compete at the University of the Incarnate Word Invitational on Saturday in San Antonio.
